California takes step to end factory farming

A certain brother-in-law tipped me off to a California ballot measure proposed in the fall that would reform the industrial nature of our farming, which has proven to be cruel to humans, unfair to workers, and environmentally harmful to communities. The measure

would ban cramped metal cages for egg-laying hens, metal gestation crates for pregnant sows and veal crates for lambs — standard industry practices in which the animals are kept so confined that they can barely move.

This is great news, and since California has proven to be a leader in legislation in the past, let’s hope this will spark a nationwide trend, though it won’t be easy. Farmers have powerful lobbyists, and factory farms have proliferated in part from massive government subsidies.
