If it’s in your pool, it’s on your chicken

Europe bans chlorinated chickens raised in the US because they taste bad. Slate’s Explainer explores whether chlorine actually affects the taste of our birds.

Let’s widen the perspective here to say….what? Slate reasons that the process, which developed in reaction to 70s salmonella scares, doesn’t alter the smell and taste of the chicken. But at the end of the day, chickens are soaked in chlorine baths (h/t Slate) to kill pathogens.

Whether American chickens taste worse or not, any system that creates a need to douse chickens in chlorine needs to be examined.
